Compared to the normal forms, mutants of the pea containing of genes, determining the transformation of leaflets into tendrils, produce smaller vegetative and generativemasses. However their photosynthetic aclivity period of the leaves is longer, therate of CO₂ conversion is faster, and their stomatal apparatus is more efficient. The total of 27 semileafless cultivars of the pea have been registered in Poland from 1979 up to 2003. Compared to traditionally leaved cultivars, they are characterized by a higher resistance to lodging during vegetative season, and some of them also prior to harvest. At present, the level of crop yield for both groups of cultivars is similar, and their cultivation does not require separate agronomic measures.
