In non-limited nutrient experiments (basal medium + 100 µg Ptot. dm-3 and 2000 µg Ntot. dm-3) the highest production (growth rate, chlorophyll ɑ, dry weight) of Chlorella fusca and Ankistrodesmus falcatus grown in pure cultures was obtained. Similar enhancement of mixed cultures (1:1) was observed despite the production of each one being lower than its own in pure culture. C. fusca requires relatively higher amounts of nitrogen than A. falcatus. However, the uptake of phosphorus by C. fusca was lower than A. falcatus. On the other hand, C. fusca can inhibit the growth of A. falcatus, while A. falcatus somewhat improved the growth of C. fusca.

Ankistrodesmus falcatus (Corda) Ralfs i Chlorella fusca Shih et Krauss wyizolowano z fitoplanktonu nilowego, hodowanego na pożywce MWC (Star 1964) ze zmodyfikowaną zawartością azotu i fosforu. Glony hodowano w temperaturze 25±1°C przy świetle sztucznym o intensywności 1.6 x 10 16 kwantów cm-1 s-1. Najwyższe produkcje (tempo wzrostu, chlorofil ɑ, sucha masa) C. fusca i A. falcatus osiągnięto w kulturach czystych przy nielimitowanej podaży azotu i fosforu (podłoże podstawowe + 100 µg P dm-3 i 2000 µg N dm-3) (tabela I, II). Podobne wyniki uzyskano w kulturach mieszanych (1:1), chociaż produkcja każdego z glonów była niższa niż osiągnięta w kulturach czystych. C. fusca wymagała stosunkowo większych ilości azotu niż A. falcatus, odwrotnie niż w przypadku fosforu (tabela III). Z drugiej strony C. fusca może hamować wzrost A. falcatus podczas gdy ten ostatni nieco poprawia wzrost C. fusca (ryc. 1). Ponadto pożywka, na której rozwijała się C. fusca wywierała efekt hamujący na populacje fitoplanktonu z Nilu, szczególnie okrzemek (tabela I). Natomiast pożywka na której hodowano A. falcatus stymulowała wzrost większości glonów z Nilu, szczególnie przedstawicieli rodzajów Chlorella, Scenedesmus, Oscillatoria i Navícula.
