The paper aims to present the way the compulsory agricultural insurances were functioning in Poland. As a obligatory measures they were introduced since 2008. However, it needs to be mention that on voluntary basis only 50 000 farmers used this form of insurances in 2006. The law which introduced crop insurances in 2005 has many faulty solutions, i.e. high integral and reduction franchises. Those were subjects to many changes due to the fact that did not protect sufficiently insured farmers. The calculations of the insurance costs show that after taking into account subvention of 70 pln they amount to 140 pln/ha. This sums seams to be too high and thus discouraged farmers to buy insurances. Other factor discouraging use of crop insurances were low level of production for the market, specialization in animal production as well as low perception of damage risk.
