The paper presents some scientific discussion (taking place for a number of years) regarding area size and economic potential of the agricultural farms. Strengths and weaknesses of small and large farms were presented under conditions of a free market economy. Threats which come from too rigorous limiting the number of farms were indicated as well as opportunities for an adjustment of the small area farms to the requirements of the European Union by increasing their economic potential.
