Hamsters were injected subcutaneously on the 8th gestation day with cadmium chloride at doses of 0, 0.5, 1.O, and 2.0 mg Cd/kg b.w. Rats were treated similarly with single 0, 2 or 3 mg Cd/kg b. w. doses on the 9th gestation day and with a 1 mg dose on the 7th to 10th gestation days. The 1 and 2 mg doses were embryotoxic (inereased number of embryo resorptions), foetotoxic (inhibited embryo growth) and teratogenic (structure malformations of foetuses) in hamster. In contrast, under the conditions used cadmium was neither embryotoxic nor teratogenic to rats even when the dams were treated with subtoxic doses.
