The 'study' is a new type of a land-use planning document. Such studies are developed jointly by bilateral working teams. Underlying to the joint work of multi-national teams are 'Transborder Co-operation Agreements' concluded by governments and 'Physical Planning Co-operation Agreements' concluded by relevant ministries. The article reviews Polish planning projects on transborder areas near the border with Belorus, the Czech Republic and Germany. The comparison of the nature and scope of issues addressed in these projects has revealed great similarities in the way environmental and transportation issues are handled there. Settlement is approached similarly, too. However, differences are observed on economic issues. Two approaches can be differentiated: The 'narrow' approach, where several rather general strategic goals are listed. Detailed proposals are the domain of the private sector and will be featured later during siting proposals in Local Land-Use Plans; The 'broad' approach, where specific economic objectives are defined and matching zoning proposals are made apart from strategic goals. The broad approach is closer to the provisions of the "Development Strategies" and development plans for Euro-regions. It appears to be closer to the methodologies applied in Eastern European countries. New methodologies must be developed for Transborder Area Land-Use Planning Studies to meet the needs of both nations.
