Concentrations of cadmium and lead were determined by FAAS in the hairs of 60 people aged 18-50, living in Gliwice and nearby areas. The mean contents of the metals were 0.30 µg/g and 6.82 µg/g, respectively. Higher concetrations of cadmium and lead were noted in the hairs of inhabitants of the industrial zone of Gliwice than in those living in the agricultural areas of the Gliwice region. Higher contents of lead and cadmium were observed in the hairs of the men than of the women. The highest contents of the metals were found in hairs of older persons (45-50 years group). No significant differences were observed between trace element content in dark and fair hairs. However, a trend could be noted that the hairs of the smokers contained more lead and cadmium than those of non-smokers.
