In the period 1987-1990 studies on mixtures of Lolium perenne cultivars with Trifolium repens were carried out at the Experimental Station Grodziec Śląski . The following Lolium perenne cultivars were used: ‘Nadmorski’, ‘Solen’ and ‘Argona’. A component was the Trifolium repens cv. ‘Astra’. The yield of dry matter, crude protein, crude fibre content and in vitro digestibility were estimated. Depending on the year and cultivar differences in the DM yield ranged from 7.60-10.15 t ha⁻¹. Crude protein content ranged from 18.6-23.4% of DM whereas crude fibre content ranged from 19.1-24.4% of DM. High percentage of in vitro digestibility was gained. The proportion of Lolium perenne in mixtures changed during experimental period. The highest content was reached by Lolium perenne cv. ‘Argona’. The second experiment was carried out within the 1992-1994. Grass and Trifolium repens mixtures including 5, 4 or 2 species were tested. The location of the 3 experimental stations were similar, the sward use was differend: Grodziec - 4-6 grazings; Lipowa – one cutting and 3-4 grazings; Rymanów - 1 cutting and 2 grazings during the season. The differences between participation of individual components of mixtures and grazings use were found. The highest amount of Lolium perenne was observed when the pasture was grazed most intensively. The results show the possibility of improving the quality of feed from grassland by using suitable mixtures of Lolium perenne with Trifolium repens.
