Genome of a first model plant Arabidopsis thaliana was sequenced in 2000. The genome is composed of five chromosomes, containing 29,1; 19,6; 23,2; 17,5 and 26,0 Mbp, respectively, in total 125 Mbp and 25 498 genes. Genes contain approximately 2000 bp, coding polypeptide chain of about 50 000 daltons. Genomes of cultivated plants are expected to contain similar number of genes, however the amount of repetitive sequences is significantly different among individual species. In Arabidopsis genome the repetitive sequences are present in amount of 50% of DNA. About 10% of genes are involved in cell defense responses. Function of about 50% genes with known structure are of not yet known function.
