Oznaczono zawartość rtęci ogółem w powierzchniowej warstwie (0-10 cm) śródlądowych i przybrzeżnych osadów dennych pobranych w różnych rejonach kraju w latach 1993-1994. Rtęć oznaczono techniką bezpłomieniowej spektrometrii absorpcji ( CV-A AS). Zbadane osady zawierały silnie zróżnicowane stężenia rtęci - od 11 ng/g masy suchej w Jeziorze Żarnowieckim do 1800 ng/g w kanale Martwej Wisły.

Total mercury concentrations were determined in surface layer (0-10 cm) of sediments collected in 1992-94 from various freshwater and nearshore areas in Poland. The method of measurement was cold vapour atomic absorption spectrometry after wet digestion of the samples with concentrated nitric acid. The sediment samples analysed in this work showed high variations in mercury concentration depending on collection site. The samples collected from sites relatively distant from the urbanized and industrialized areas contained 12 ng/g dry wt (streams), 11-50 ng/g (lakes), 21-70 ng/g (rivers) and 16-44 ng/g (channels) mercury. The sediment samples collected from sites located very close to, or within, the urbanized and industrialized areas showed much higher mercury concentrations: up to 490 ng/g in ponds and streams, up to 690 ng/g in rivers, and up to 1800 ng/g in channels. The data point to inappropriate mercury management in Poland.
