Teaching of animal genetics was started in Poland probably at the end of the 19th century or at the beginning of the 20th one, at the Jagiellonian University in Cracow. The subject called: 'General Knowledge of Animal Breeding' was taught there during the second year of a three- year Agricultural Study. As early as in 1905, Department of Animal Breeding was created in Dublany - belonging to University of Technology in Lwów. In 1912, a book entitled: 'The Rules of Inheritance in Animals and Plants' written by Prof. Z. Moczarski, was available in Poland. In the period between the two World Wars, general animal breeding and, what follows, elements of genetics were taught at the Jagiellonian University, at the Poznań University, at the Stefan Batory University in Wilno, at the Lwów University of Technology (Faculty of Agriculture and Forestry) and at the Main School of Farming in Warsaw. Directly after the Second World War, the lectures on animal genetics and their content did not differ in any significant way from those coming from the pre-war period. Since 1948, due to political reasons, the problems of genetics have been ignored or presented in a distorted way. The 1956 year brought along the return to teaching of general genetics, based on the rules formulated by Iear Mendel, as a part of the subject: ,Animal Breeding". In the 1970s, the studies at the Faculty of Animal Husbandry included, except for 'general breeding', such subjects as: „Genetic Methods of Animal" Improvement and „Molecular and Population Genetics"; after introducing some changes into the programme of education, genetics became a part of the subject: ,,Animal Genetics and Breeding Methods". At present, due to considerable autonomy of universities, teaching of animal genetics in Poland is very differentiated. It takes place not only at the faculties of Animal Husbandry, but also at those of Veterinary Medicine, in different number of hours and during various years of studies at the above-mentioned faculties.
