The first decades after world war II were characterized by making up of the arrears but also by much progress in the area of grassland. Grassland research centres were active at the Warsaw University of Agriculture (SGGW) and other agricultural universities in the country, the Research Institute of Land Reclamation and Grassland Management (IMUZ) subordinated to the Ministry of Agriculture, some other agricultural schools and organizations were involved in this activity as well. The importance of grassland, especially the pastures, for farming became commonly understood. Considerable increase of the meadow yielding was achieved; the average yields of hay in the country increased from 18-35 dt · ha⁻¹ in 1935 up to 50 dt · ha⁻¹ in the seventies. The progress resulted from the activities of research centres and widespread, active propagation in the practice. Numerous, direct contacts, close connections among the research centres, like IMUZ, SGGW, agricultural universities, Polish Academy of the Sciences on one side; and their good relations with practical grassland management represented by the Main Technical Organization (NOT), central and local administration on the other, motivated that progress.
