The aim of the investigation was to find out if it is possible to determine tentatively the malting usefulness of barley grain based on the grain extract content defined by Bishop formula and on the technological value of malts defined according to Molina-Cano. The material for the experiment was the grain of the malting barley cultivars Rudzik, Brenda, Scarlett, Madonna, Stratus and Sezam, also feed cultivars: Rataj and Rastik. The influence of crop management factors, cultivars and growing season on grain and malt parameters to be determined in Molina-Cano quality estimation was studied Grain malting was earned out under steeping, sprout¬ing and drying conditions similar to those used in pilsner type malt preparation Additionally, 1000 grains weight, saccharification time and protein content in malts were determined. The theoreti¬cal extract content of malts by Bishop was defined. Correlation coefficients between extract content by Bishop and grain malt usefulness index by Molina-Cano were calculated. Statistically significant relationships between Q index and extract content by Bishop for brewing cultivars and hull-less Rastik cultivai were found The results obtained allow the recognition of the malt extract content estimation method on the basis of Bishop formula as useful in grain rating of brewing barley for malting purposes.
