The aim of the research project was to evaluate the vitality of chosen Polish creeping red fescue varieties in conditions of varying defoliation frequency, over the period of two years after sowing, on the basis of the content of chlorophyll pigments. Polish cultivated varieties of creeping red fescue (Reda, Nakielska, Atra) show comparable levels of chlorophyll pigments and similar vitality. In this respect, the new AND 492 variety proves to be an interesting cultivation creation. The evaluated varieties do not respond to increased defoliation frequency by vitality decrease. Therefore, these varieties may be considered mare suitable for meadow and lawn cultivation. There is a large variability of the occurrence of chlorophyll pigments in creeping red fescue; however, even in difficult weather conditions these plants show high vitality. Chlorophyll pigments may be considered reliable indicators of plant vitality and plant responses to changing weather factors, regardless of cultivation conditions.
