The objective of the investigation was evaluating the prophylactic efficacy of Metrisan AN in herds exposed to MMA and the effects of this preparate in practical conditions. The examinations were done on 32 sows and their progeny - 311 piglets. The sows were divided into two groups: group I -16 sows received once intrauterinarily the entire Metrisan AN contents of a syringe after parturition. Group II - 16 untreated sows served as a control. Metrisan AN contains ampicillin and neomycin and components increasing phagocytic activity of granulocytes. It was found that in group I the MMA syndrome occured in 1 sow (6.25%) but in group II (control), in 3 (18.75%) sows. Prevalence of discharges from the genital organs was comparable in the two groups but they persisted a by 2-3 day shorter period in sows treated with Metrisan AN. The differences in body weight gain between both groups of piglets were statistically insignificant. Diarrhea was present in four broods (25%) of piglets from the Metrisan AN treated sows and in 6 broods (40%) from control sows. Frequency of losses was lower by 1.57% in the experimental group compared to the control group. One can conclude that Metrisan AN applied intrauterinarily after parturition positively affects the health of sows and their progeny. It can be used as a prophylactic in herds exposed to the MMA syndrome.
