Total mercury concentrations have been quantified in the caps and stalks of eleven species of wild edible mushrooms collected at the surroundings of the Lake Wdzydzkie in the Kaszuby region in 1996-97. The method of mercury measurement was clod vapor atomic absorption spectroscopy (CV-AAS) after wet digestion of the samples with concentrated nitric acid in Teflon vessels placed in a microwave oven. Rozites caperata. Sarcodon imbricatus, and Cortinarius mucosus showed greatest concentrations of mercury, and the ranges of the mean values were from 2100±340 to 2400± 1900 ng/g dry weight in the caps and from 730±180 to 1200±1500 ng/g in the stalks. Slightly smaller values were noted for Hypoloma capnoides and Tricholomaflavovirens, i.e. from 1300± 1400 to 1700 ± 860 in the caps and from 680 ± 820 to 1100 ± 650 ng/g in the stalks, respectively. For other examined mushroom species, mercury concentrations were below 700 ng/g in the caps and below 400 ng/g in the stalks. The stalks of the mushroom species examined in this study usually had smaller mercury concentrations than the caps. The quotient of mercury concentrations in caps and stalks varied considerably, depending on mushroom species.
