The classification of the tribe Platynotini is reviewed and revised. Cladistic analysis, based on 155 morphological characters, involved 60 taxa (58 genera of Platynotini and 2 outgroups of Oncotini). Preliminary comments on character homologies and polarities are provided, with some illustrations to facilitate understanding of selected characters. The outgroup problem is discussed. In the most parsimonious cladograms the Platynotini constitute a monophyletic lineage. Three generic groups are recognised: monophyletic “trigonopoid” and “melanocratoid”, and polyphyletic “platynotoid”. The results of the analysis do not support the classification proposed by Koch (1956). Redescriptions of 56 genera of Platynotini are given, and two new genera are described from Africa: Platykochius (type species Selinus platessa Fairmaire, 1887) and Pseudoselinus (type species Eurynotus punctatostriatus Gerstaecker, 1854). Alaetrinus Iwan, 1995 is recognised as a genus. The following new synonymies are proposed: Anchophthalmus Gerstaecker, 1854 (=Oncotiphallops Koch, 1956) and Selinus Mulsant et Rey, 1853 (=Monodius Koch, 1956). 13 new combinations are proposed. Anchophthalmops Koch (4), Anchophthalmus Gerst. (1), Pseudoselinus gen. nov. (3), Platykochius gen. nov. (3) and Selinus Muls. et Rey (2).
