The article presents, in a chronological order, the history of shaping the green and open areas in Boston, one of the oldest towns in the USA, being the most expensive grounds in this town. The author deals with the share of various institutions, of the organization “Alliance for Green Areas” and of the population in the activities devoted for shaping and management of green and open areas in the Boston agglomeration. The periods of neglect in protection of these areas, as well as remedial measures have also been presented, drawing special attention to the education of inhabitants and of those people who are related with management problems of the town. Finally, the author describes the present concept of the system of green areas which takes use of existing but dispersed small elements.
