Nickel contents in selected herbs and aqueous extracts prepared from these herbs (in infusions and decoctions) and in some liquid herbal medicines were determined by atomic absorption spectrometry. The samples were dry-mineralised and the nickel-APDC (Pyrrolidinecarbodithioic acid Ammonium salt) complex was extracted to organic phase МІВK (Isobutyl methyl ketone) saturated with deionised water. Nickel contents in dry herbs were on the average comparable with amounts of this element in the plants, maximum to 2.15 µg/g. Degree of extraction of nickel to the aqueous phase ranged from 23.9% in fennel seed (Fructus Foeniculi) to 78.2% in St John's wort (Herba Hyperici). Nickel concentrations in liquid herbal medicines were from 0.61 µg/100 cm3 (Tinctura Menthae piperitae) to 39.20 µg/100 cm3 in the Nervosol K (Guttae Sedativae) formulation. It was found the examined aqueous herbal extracts and liquid herbal medicines may constitute an additional source of nickel for humans using these formulations.
