For the medical aim this alkaloid is mostly obtained from Berberis vulgaris L., Hydrastis canadensis L., Coptis japonka Mak., Phellodendron amurense Rupr. and Thalictrum foliolosum D. C. It occurs in the concentration range from 1.1 to 10.2%. The salts of berberin (chloride and sulphate) are characterized by their strong activity on Gram-positive bacteria, yeasts, viruses and protozoons pathogenic for men. At the concentration of 10-500 µg/cm³ they inhibit growth of the most of the earlier mentioned microorganisms. The Gram-negative rods from the Enterobacteriaceae family as well as the Pseudomonas rods are less sensitive (500-10.000 µg/cm³). Furthemore, some of the rods are able to assimilate berberin. Berberin is first all used for treating cutaneous leishmaniosis (Leishmania tropica), trachoma (Chlamydia trachomatis) and digestive infections caused by Escherichia coli, Salmonella enteritidis and Vibrio parahaemolyticus. It is also possible to apply this alkaloid in the case of amoebiosis (Entamoeba histolytica), mycosis of the digestive tract and vaginomycosis brought about by Candida albicans as well as in the case of the respiratory infections caused by Streptococcus pyogenes, S. pneumoniae, Staphylococcus aureus, Haemophilus influenzae and Candida albicans. It has been found that berberin inhibits autoreproduction of the inluenza virus (A and B) and the activity of the reverse transcriptase of HIV-1 virus responsible for AIDS development.

Alkaloid do celów leczniczych otrzymuje się głównie z Berberis vulgaris L., Hydrastis canadensis L., Coptisjaponica Mak., Phellodendron amurense Rupr. i Thalictrum foliolosum D. C. Występuje on w korze i korzeniach wymienionych roślin w ilości 1,1-10,2%.
