Destroyed 70 years ago, at the end of the World War Two, historic centre of Gdańsk was redefined in first post-war years, when during its rebuilding took place a creation of the socialist city. But it was already after 1956 breakthrough when came a change of paradigm of cities development accordance with functionalist ideas. These new transformations in a way of rebuilding or rather a new development of the historic centre of Gdańsk represents general plans from 1952 and 1962, which are no longer current nowadays but still remain an essential reference for modern perspective of its spatial transformations. High costs of realisation an overscaled, sketched in 60's and 70's communication system were carried out by the XX century only to certain extent. Paradoxically it was only when Poland joined EU in 2004 that a huge scale of possible funds allowed to fully carry out the vision of city developed in a spirit of functionalism. The question about the taken course in planning of Gdańsk, inextricably linked with an established many years ago model of mobility, reappears today in public debate and promises upcoming changes in an established urban doctrine of the town.
