Prophylactic value of the elaborated inactivated vaccine was assayed under close controlled conditions on 15 calves, i.e. 10 vaccinated and 5 controls, aged 5—14 weeks. Black-White breed. In all immunized animals there was found by the skin test a delayed type hypersensitivity in the period of 3—8 weeks after the first dose of the vaccine. Specific leukocyte migration inhibition accompanied allergic reactions reaching between the 4th and 7th week since the first injection of the vaccine the values from 22.3% to 49.3%. Artificial infection performed two months after the vaccination showed a complete resistance of three calves: in 4 animals specific lesions were noted only after the use of high doses of a virulent strain nf Trichophyton verrucosum (10³ — 10⁴MID — minimal infectious dose) and in other 3 calves after 10² — 10³ MID. In control animals clinical lesions were observed at the dose of 1—10¹MID. The therapeutic value of the vaccine was studied under natural conditions of infection in 639 animals aged 2—8 months. In the group of the oldest animals (7—9 months) remission of the disease was observed within 4 weeks in all animals vaccinated. In younger calves the percentage of recoveries at that time was lower and ranged from 40.6% to 73.6%: however, a distinct improvement of the clinical state was found in all animals vaccinated. Taking into account good immunogenic properties of the vaccine and its full safety of usage it seems reasonable to anticipate that the elaborated vaccine may go in for a competition with living vaccines against trichophytosis.
