The Cohesion Fund came into existence on the Treaty of Maastricht. Each country of the EU can apply for aid providing that their GDP is less than 90% of the EU avarage. The task of the Fund is enabling the integration of the countries through cofinancing infrastructure projects in the field of transportation and environmental protection. In Poland the transportation projects focus on : modernization of the main railroads, building motorways and main roads as well as reconstructing domestic roads. Whilst environmental projects concern: improvemnent of the quality of surface waters, rationalization of the wastes economy, improvement of the quality of air and flood safety. The assumptions of the Fund 's activity are included in „ The National Plan of Development And the Strategy of Benefiting from the Cohesion Fund".
