Invasive species of fish can, due to their adaptation to a wide range of environmental conditions, extend their distribution into new areas. At the same time they are able to efficiently compete with indigenous species for ecological niches and pose a serious threat to them, either through predation or by spreading diseases. Invasive species are considered one of the biggest threats to biodiversity of aquatic ecosystems. Restoring and maintaining aquatic environments in as good condition as possible is one of the most important aspects of slowing the rate of spreading of invasive fish species. Operations included in the update of The National Water and Environmental Programme, one of the key elements of the introduced update to River Basin Management Plans can help in accomplishing this task.
