As the processes of the adaptation and restructuring of Polish agriculture require well thought-out actions, there is a need to construct multi-variant scénarios of development. These should detail the mechanisms whose systematic pursuit and consistent implementation will offer the desired final results. The main problems with adjusting Polish agriculture to EU conditions will be linked to: reduced employment in agriculture, especially in the production sphere, changes in land-use structure, an improvement in agrarian structure, an intensification of production, structural and qualitative changes in crop and livestock production, the development and modernisation of the agro-processing industry, the multidirectional activation of the agricultural market. Forecast analyses indicate that an acceleration of the processes of structural change in agri-culture (i.e. the optimistic variant) may occur if there is: a significant increase in the level of public funding. full social acceptance of actions affecting the interests of other groups in socicty, a considerable input of capital from the EU budget (SAPARD, FEOGA, the World Bank), favourable commercial conditions long term in world (and especially European) agri-culture. It is highly probable that the course of modernisation and restructuring processes, as well as the strategies for long-term development, will fall somewhere between the two extreme sce-narios (i.e. the optimistic and the pessimistic). This will in effect offer a realistic scenario that is sometimes closer to the optimistic (desired) one and sometimes close to the pessimistic one. The realistic scenario, based on a directed development strategy, will ccrtainly be more beneficial than one that will simply extrapolate best conditioning and trends to date. An awareness of threats and difficulties inherent in implementing a programme for the development of agriculture in symbio-sis with that of the EU and Europe will allow for the earlier direction of action, and thereby favour obtainmcnt of a variant close to the optimal.
