Design of risk transfer instruments, such as insurance against natural disasters should be preceded by the analysis of the risk features. Such analysis will help to select the instrument which will finish the task the best way. The primary objective of the instrument design is efficient risk transfer. In the paper the analysis of flood risk characteristics in Poland was presented. The relations between the flood risk characteristics and key features of flood risk transfer instruments were identified. As the result the recommendations for the risk transfer instruments design were indicated. Assumptions and their influence on outcomes were discussed. The author’s analysis aims at deepening knowledge about relations between the characteristics of flood risk and key features of flood risk transfer instruments for the better design of efficient instruments.
