The effect of natural, but enhanced Alnus incana succession on soils was studied by comparing soil profiles under alder and in an adjacent unprofitable meadow. Nitrogen enrichment in soil under alder caused a strong nitrification, hence acidification. The soil acidity decreased an average from 11,5 to 32,8 mmoles of H⁺ per 100 g of soil. This in turn caused soil cation mobilization and local streamwater eutrophication.
