Demographic projections predict that in 2035 almost one in three Poles will be more than 60 years old. The phenomenon of population ageing becomes a problem faced by people around the world. Old age is a physiological and last period of ontogenetic development of the individual. The increase in the share of the elderly in the total population and the ‘very old’ among older people is called double ageing. Each person, in order to cope with difficult tasks of the period of old age, should be aware of their responsibility for the quality of their own old age. Demonstrating concern for fitness development throughout life will make it possible to accept the changing conditions and the fact of passing. Properly formed health habits definitely delay the biological ageing of an organism. An active lifestyle is one of the conditions for successful human ageing. The key to the ‘good old age’ can become physical and mental fitness. This will prepare for physiological and not pharmacological old age.
