The studies of 1478 salted, raw swine skins, selected at random, have enabled their evaluation according to PN 75/P-22012 standard. Swine crops have been examined for biological, technical and technological defects. The frequency of the defects in the examined lot of skins, have been tested using x² test. The losses born by skin deliverers caused by poor quality of raw material in 1980-83 were calculated and analysed. The results obtained have shown that bad conditions of cow breeding, lack of interest, on the part of deliverers in the skin quality have brought about the elimination of approximately 80% of the crops. Due to poor quality of the skins, Wrocław Meat Factory alone, lost approx. 2 mln zloties in 1984. The conclusion may be drawn that at present stage, the cropping for leather industry is unprofitable.
