W strukturze emisji przeważają procesy spalania nad technologicznymi. Dla ustalenia wpływu rtęci zawartej w wodzie i glebie naukowcy z AGH badali jej kumulację w glebie, w liściach drzew i narządach ryb.

Mercury ranks second among heavy metals in terms of environmental toxicity (with plutonium ranking first). Poland is at the top of countries with excessive mercury emissions to the atmosphere. Mercury emissions are the highest in the Upper Silesia region due to the high number of industrial plants located there. Mercury emissions from combustion are higher than industrial emissions. The researchers from the Academy of Mining and Metallurgy studied mercury accumulation in the soil, tree leaves and fish organs to determine its impact on water and soil. The studies indicate that all environmental elements are compliant with EU legislation in these areas.
