Obesity occurrence increased dramatically during the past decades and has now reached epidemic proportions in the world, also in Poland. Evidence that gut microbiota composition can differ between obese and lean humans has led to the speculation that gut microbiota can participate in the pathophysiology of obesity. Metagenomic studies demonstrated that certain mixes of gut microbiota may protect or predispose the host to obesity. The proposed mechanisms by which the microbiome may contribute to obesity include increasing dietary energy harvest, promoting fat deposition, triggering systemic inflammation and the influence on appetite regulation.
