The origins of modern law and legislation, including that regarding animal husbandry and medical care, can be traced to Sumer. The authors have compared the provisions of the ancient Sumerian and Babylonian codes of law, beginning from the Ur-Nammu Code of Law, through Lipit-Ishtar and subsequent codices, until the Code of Hammurabi, which codified veterinary activities. The study is a multidimensional analysis of these law codes focused on provisions concerning animals, from punishments for offences against animals to the use of animals as tools in sentence execution.
