The microagglutination test (MAT) for the detection of Treponema hyodysenteriae antibody in pig sera has been described. From the faeces and colon contents of pigs there have been isolated 115 T. hyodysenteriae and 38 T. innocens strains. The isolates represented mostly serotype 2 biotype I. A suspension of Treponema spp inactivated with formalin (0.1%) proved to be most useful. No decrease of antibodies against T. hyodysenteriae in sera with positive titres against Leptospira was found following absorption with antigens against Leptospira spp.
