In 1984 and 1987-1988 the number of population and distribution of owls on 2 large census plots, representing typical landcapes for Eastern Poland: farmland with "forest islands" (Fig. 1) and a large forest (Fig. 2), were studied by the mapping method. Results are shown in Table 1. In both types of habitats Strix aluco preferred old tree stands where it formed local concentrations. Asio otus was distributed more evently but, in a large forest the edge was preferred by this species. Density of Strix aluco population was similar to the average values given for Germany. Low population density of Asio otus could be the result of the depression year of Microtus arvalis population. The density of Athene noctua and Tyto alba was relatively high in comparison to the Eastern part of Germany, but clearly lower than in Western Germany.
