The Karel University Earth Sciences Faculty, Carthography and Physical Geography Department employees are working now on two morphometric maps for the Chief Architect Office of the City of Prague. The topographic surface gradients maps for the area of Prague takes into account the following gradient ranges: 0-2°, 2-5°, 5-10°, 10-15°, and over 15°. The gradients were determined from a 1 : 25,000 contour map by means of the gradient scale. The area boundaries marked with a step line were replaced by interpolation by solid lines and the areas of the same gradients thus delineated were distinguished with colours. In the black-and-white original map, the gradients are marked with the screen (the darker the shading the higher is the gradient). The gradient map will be helpful in planning of the Prague development, with a due regard to the details related to industrial development there. The relief element orientation map distinguishes the following five groups of directions of orientations in the aspect of architectural needs: 1. fiat surfaces (with a 0-1° gradient), 2. south gradients (azimuth 135-225°), 3. South-east and south-west gradieints (azimuth equalling 90-135° and 225-270°), 4. north-east and south-west gradients (azimuth 45-90° and 270-315°), 5. north gradients (azimuth of 315-45°). The flat surfaces were measured by means of the gradient scale; orientation of the remaining surfaces were determined after the gradient azimuth. The intercontour areas between individual gradients of the boundary azimuths were distinguished by colours. In the black-and-white original map the identically oriented surfaces are marked with a screen, which is the heaviest on the least sunlighted slopes. The orientation map will be used in selecting sites for buildings, which are the most preferable from the standpoint the orientation.
