Pojęciem „wyroby papierowe” określa się łącznie wytwory papierowe i przetwory papierowe (zwane uprzednio papierniczymi). Wytworami papierowymi nazywa się tworzywa włókniste otrzymane w postaci arkuszy lub wstęgi z odpowiednio przygotowanych, uformowanych, odwodnionych i wysuszonych włókien roślinnych. Przetworami papierowymi nazywane są produkty otrzymane w wyniku poddania wytworów papierowych procesom obróbki chemicznej lub mechanicznej. Wyroby papierowe są obecnie najczęściej stosowanymi podłożami drukowymi. Problem ze ścisłym zdefiniowaniem, co jest papierem, a co tekturą jest nie tylko naszym polskim problemem i nie tylko dotyczy ostatnich lat. W wielu przypadkach podział zależy od zastosowania danego produktu i jego właściwości, czasami jest wręcz intuicyjny.

The term “paper-products” determine both paper products and paper goods. Paper products are called fibrous materials obtained in the form of sheets or web from appropriately prepared, formed, dehydrated and dried vegetable fibres. Products obtained as a result of subjecting paper products to chemical or mechanical processing are defined as paper goods. Paper products are currently the most often applied printing substrates. The problem with the accurate definition what is paper and what is board is not only the Polish one and not only concerns recent years. In many cases the classification depends upon the application of the given product and its properties but sometimes it is simply intuitive. Paper products are classified into two basic groups, i.e., paper and board and this is so-called the fundamental classification. Apart from that there exist also other classifications of paper products according to their grammage (dr basis weight). They belong to so-called customary classifications that are different in various countries.
