According to the different centres researching the opinions of Poles on their country's accession to the EU. a majority speak in favour of it. But is such an opinion shared within the agricultural population? An answer to this question has been provided by the empirical results of re-search carried out in Golub-Dobrzyń gmina in July 2000. A study of 406 farms in 18 villages was made (from among a total of 1066 individually-owned farms within the gmina). In answer to a question "Are you for Poland's accession to the European Union?" only 36.4% of respondents said yes, while 49.8% were against. However, as many as 18.8% of the farmers surveyed were unable to answer the question put. something which attests to the inadequate provisioning of information by the mass media, as well as to the unsuitability of the forms and means which are used to present the issue. Those who are not prepared are unable to assess the threats and benefits that accession may bring. In answer to the question "How do you view the threats/benefits resulting from Poland's accession to the EU?" only 25.1% referred to benefits, in spite of the aforementioned fact that 36% were apparently in favour of accession per se. A much higher proportion (of nearly 56%) gave answers pointing to the threats associated with accession.
