W celu uzyskania maksymalnego plonu, buraki muszą wzrastać w warunkach zapewniających efektywną sumę temperatur i odpowiednie natężenie promieniowania słonecznego.

Sugar beet (Beta vulgaris L.) plants are biennials and during the first growing season their roots accumulate sucrose. This species provides about 30% of world’s sugar production. Sugar beets can be cultivated in the temperate latitudes of between 30–60°N, mostly in the European Union, North America and Russia. The yield of sugar beet is mainly determined by the amount of radiation captured and the agronomic strategy applied. A multitude of other agronomic factors can influence the yield. The goal of this review is to characterize several yield-conditioning factors of sugar beet like: soil conditions, features and size of seeds, seed germination, thermal time (°Cd) after emergence, early seedlings growth, leaf area index (LAI) and root growth. Temperature of soil is of prime importance at the beginning of seed germination. Generally, the higher is a temperature of soil, the faster is a seed emergence. Simultaneously, sugar beet seedlings are most susceptible to ground frost during emergence of cotyledon above soil surface. Each factor decreasing the osmotic potential of cells during cotyledon elongation increases the seedling tolerance to freezing. The heterogenic emergence and subsequent asynchronous growth of seedlings are the basic elements affecting variability of sugar beet yielding. In consequence, slower expansion of leaf area limits solar radiation interception and decreases plant productivity. In practice, leaf area expansion can be increased by early sowing and acceleration of seedling growth as a result of appropriate seed and soil preparation. To obtain maximal yield, sugar beet need to grow under the conditions providing a given sum of effective temperature and solar radiation. Nowadays, sugar beet cultivars need about 1050°Cd from sowing until the achievement of 90% of leaf area index (LAI). Radiation use efficiency (RUE) can thus reach about 1.5 g dry weight MJ. In July and August the growth of sugar beet is the fastest, but may be limited by soil water availability. The full ground cover by leaves and rooting depth of up to 1 m in July promote relative drought tolerance. The root system of sugar beet is subject to fast cycles of renewal and decay within the growing season. In water stress conditions, the ability to fast regeneration is strategic for plant survival and productivity. The impact of nitrogen fertilization is crucial for a yield of sugar beet – the highest influence of this element is observed on root and leaf dry matter production. During last decades, the harvest index of sugar beet has been increased by reducing the leaf yield as one of the selection criteria in breeding programmes.
