Seren Bjorn, who died in 1819, "a royal Prussian supervisor of plantations" in Gdańsk wrote an extremely interesting book. "A glance at the advantages of good treating of Prussian willows", (Gdańsk 1804), translated into Polish by K. C. Mrongovius. Bjorn presented willow species which he considered the most valuable in cultivation and use. He argued that willows were a very valuable tree group which, due to the abundance of species and varieties adapted to all habitats. The author of the article supports the views of the Dane. The willow, however, is still an underestimated and underutilised tree species.
This is a beautiful ornamental tree species, a relict originating from millions years ago which can spread widely and can be planted in urban areas. Because of tree shape, unconventional shape of leaves and their autumn colour, this tree is particularly attractive. Its main advantage, however, is high resistance to adverse conditions prevailing in city areas, mainly to air pollution. The gingko tree is also resistant to air deficit in soil, to frost and fire. Thus, actions should be taken to introduce this species quickly in city areas.
The urban design of Gdańsk - as in the case of other European cities - incorporates a successful inclusion of alleys in the city's layout. The author begins the description with the symbolic alley, a painting by Izaak van den Blocke on the plafond of the Red Room in the Gdańsk Town Hall, named „the allegory of the Gdańsk trade”, or „the apotheosis of Gdańsk”. The second one, the Grand Alley, was established in the 17th century, it is one of the oldest public green areas in Poland. The third alley lies in the Oliwa monastery garden. All the three alleys were established at the peak development of Gdańsk, and they have the sea in the background.

Grass-covered areas are significant to the natural environment and to man. Besides their most visible decorative role in towns, suburbs and recreation areas, they are also important to the environment because of CO₂ absorption and hygienic and sanitary considerations. A forty-year-old pine forest during 10-hr of daylight releases approximately 150 kg O₂ per hectare to the atmosphere, while at the same time a well-maintained lawn may produce between 100 and 110 kg oxygen per hectare.
Properly maintained lawns are very rare in Polish towns. They are either left unmown or mowing is applied with wrong timing, when grass is overgrown so that late mowing prevents their further development. Based on natural and economic considerations, dates for mowing of lawns enabling their proper maintenance are provided.
