Sheep which were infested with gastro-intestinal nematodes had lower clean wool yield by 15% shorter wool staple by 24,5% thinner by 7%, weaker by 10%, with less sulphur content by 8%, when compared to sheep fed concentrate containing anthelmintic-Rintal /Premix 0.6%/.
The examinations were carried out in winter, spring and summer. In 95 per cent of faecal samples taken from 144 adult and young ponies, the parasites of Strongylus, Trichonema and Triodontophorus species were found. Statistical analysis revealed a significant influence of season on the number of parasitic eggs. More eggs were noticed in the samples taken from adult horses than in those of young animals. Ponies being raised on pasture and in stables of shallow litters had fewer eggs in their faeces. It was concluded that parasitological examinations ought to be performed in different seasons.
The increasing number of dogs, including stray ones, was the reason for carrying out the pilot study on the extensiveness of verminous invasion in these animals in four central and 7 suburban quarters of Olsztyn. Fresh samples of faeces taken from 220 dogs, coming from 20 animals from each district, were examined for the presence of parasite eggs and segments of tapeworms and adults nematode forms. The studies revealed mainly the presence of nematodes and to a smaller degree the segments of Diphylidium caninum (1.3%). The extensiveness of parasite invasion commonly ranged from 10 to 45%. Toxocara canis occurred most frequently (11.8%). Moreover, eggs of Ancylostomatidae (2.7%), Toxascaris leonina (1.8%) and Trichocephalus vulpis (1.3%) were found. One can conclude that due to their carrier state of parasites, dogs in towns and cities may constitute a potential health hazard for the inhabitants. This fact is all the more significant since only a small number of animals show clinical signs of infestation.
The research conducted by the WULS Division of Horse Breeding in the Polish Konik Preservation Breeding Centre of Biebrza National Park focused on the behaviour, body condition, forage base and parasitological status of the horses. Analysis of the influence of two management systems - free-range and limited-area enclosures - on the behaviour of the horses showed that they tend to maintain a constant pattern of basic behavioural displays. Temperature was found to influence the herd’s behaviour. The factor that had the greatest impact on the horses’ body condition was the air temperature within 3 months prior to the assessment (P≤0.01). It is difficult to unequivocally assess the role of Polish Konik horses in the prevention of ecological succession. Horse foraging in the area may have a stabilizing role for purple moor-grass meadows, but mowing is necessary to maintain this ecologically valuable plant community.
