For the production of wooden construction determining the quality of pinewood to be used is of vital importance. Material on which the research was carried out came from two quality classes: WBO and WCO. Large-size as well as laboratory samples were obtained from the material to undergo tests of their physical and mechanical parameters. As the result of quality classification process of construction materials the impact of raw material quality on the parameters of semi-finished products used for the production of wooden construction was determined.
Comparative studies of ipe (Tabebuia spp.) wood photodegradation cause by treatment with outdoor and indoor UV-A light irradiation. A study on photodegradation of ipe (Tabebuia spp.) wood by UV A light has been carried out. Two types of lamps were used in the tests, i.e. a UVA-340 lamp with a wavelength of 290 - 400 nm, emitting light resembling natural light, an a UVA-351 lamp with a wavelength of 300 - 400 nm, imitating light found indoors penetrating through window panes. Colour of the samples was measured using a Datacolour 600 spectrophotometer prior and after 1,5, 10, 25, 50 and 100-hour irradiation. Characterization of investigated material included determination of its chemical components. Despite the fact that ipe wood contains high concentrations of components playing an important role in the photodegradation process (e.g. 37.2% lignin) the detected changes are minor and do not exceed 1 point. The change in colour (∆E) for ipe wood surface was mainly caused by changes in the chromatic coordinate (b*) and the lightness coordinate (L*). Greater changes occurred under the influence of a UV-340 lamp emitting the type of light resembling that found outdoors.
Impact of environmental pollution caused by sulphur mining on the chemical composition of wood and bark of birch (Betula pendula Roth.) Content of extractives, cellulose, !% NaOH soluble substances and lignin were examined. Samples were gained from cca. 70-year old birch (Betula pendula Roth.) grown in the environment polluted by sulfur mining industry. 200mm height disks were cut in the butt-end, middle and top section of the trunk. Disk from the main branch was also collected. Bark was collected from butt-end section. On the cross-section from butt-end and middle part of the trunk following zones were marked: outer, center and pith adjacent wood. On the cross-section from the top part wood was divided into outer and pith adjacent. Only one zone was marked in branch. Results show that environmental pollution caused by sulfur mining industry influences the content and distribution of extractives on the cross- and longitudinal sections. It also causes the increase of extractives content in bark. Content and distribution of 1% NaOH soluble substances are also changed on both cross-sections. Environmental pollution decreased lignin content in wood and increased this content in bark from butt-end section.
