Direct studies of wild mammals are challenging due to the difficulty for capturing and handling and the associated high costs. Thus, noninvasive hair trapping for surveying mammal populations has been widely used in wildlife ecology and management. However, the efficiency of this method may differ depending on the animal species and other different factors. Here we aimed at evaluating the potential of hair tube traps for reliable detecting mammal species as well as to assess whether type of habitat, baits, hair trap´s size variables (length, diameter and time staying active) and position variables (height, altitude, orientation and location) influenced trapping success (i.e. obtaining hair samples or not) and effectiveness (i.e. percentage of successful sampling traps and the number of species detected) of hair traps. Hair traps were done with PVC tubes with adhesive tape inside, and they were placed at different locations where mammal cues were previously detected. Collected hairs were identified to species by macro and microscopic characteristics. We collected hairs in the 82% of the hair traps placed and we detected 9 species which represented 64% of the wild mammals potentially detectable with this method in the study areas. No one of the studied variables explained trapping success. However, trap´s diameter significantly influenced effectiveness, but contrary to expected, the larger traps presented lower sampling success and less species were registered. Position variables did not influence effectiveness of hair traps. Sampling success due to baits used was related to diet preferences of the species. Further, trap´s diameter and length, height, inclination and altitude influenced collecting hair samples from the different animal taxonomic orders. These results suggest that hair trapping can be used as a good tool for the study of wild mammals, but assumptions related to trap size and position variables should be taken into account to increase the effectiveness of this method.
Background. Although the parasitofauna of wild carnivorous mammals in Poland is quite well recognized, there has been only one research carried on this issue so far in Białowieża Forest - the last lowland primeval forest of temperate zone in Europe. Material and methods. Twelve wild and two domestic species of carnivorous mammals are living in Białowieża Forest. In our work faeces or intestines of all of them except ermine (Mustela erminea) have been examined and parasites or their eggs (or oocysts) recorded. In total 222 faecal probes from 13 species and 11 intestines of weasels have been investigated. Results. All species of examined carnivorous mammals were infected with parasites. The most infected species has occurred red fox Vulpes vulpes (over 70% infected with parasites) meanwhile only about 30% of otters Lutra lutra were infected. We found at least three protozoan species, one trematode, one tapeworm and nine species of nematodes. Except trematode Alaria alata, all of them are reported for the first time from Białowieża Primeval Forest. Oocysts of coccidia have been found in faeces of nine host species, with the highest prevalence (29.4%) in badger. Six species of carnivorous mammals have been occurred infected with trematodes (highest prevalence 42.1% in wolves) and two with tapeworms (Diphyllobothrium latum with the prevalence 2.6% in otter and 31.6% in wolves). All examined host species were infected with nematodes (with prevalence from 14.7% in lynx to 72.7% in red fox). Results of our work should be treated as preliminary researches on the species composition of parasitic fauna invading carnivorous mammals in Białowieża Primeval Forest.
A survey of Babesia, Theileria and Hepatozoon was conducted in wild mammals, including the capybara (Hydrochaeris hydrochaeris; n = 14) from Brazil, the jaguar (Panthera onca; n = 2) and crab-eating raccoon (Procyon cancrivorus; n = 4) from Venezuela, and the red deer (Cervus elaphus; n = 70), red squirrel (Sciurus vulgaris; n = 5) and Eurasian pine marten (Martes martes; n = 3) from Spain. Diagnostic procedures included both microscopy and molecular methods (PCR and sequencing of the 18S rRNA gene). Microscopic examination of blood smears revealed no hematozoan infections — unlike the molecular analyses. Nine Brazilian capybaras were found to be infected with Hepatozoon canis (prevalence 64%), two of which were coinfected with a previously unknown babesid (prevalence 14%) loosely related to Theileria equi (90% 18S rRNA gene similarity according to BLAS® analysis). One jaguar and one crab-eating raccoon from Venezuela were infected by H. canis. Four of the red deer were infected with theilerids (5.7% prevalence), two with Theileria sp. and two with T. annulata. One red squirrel and three pine martens were infected with Hepatozoon sp. The isolate form the red squirrel was phylogenetically related to Hepatozoon sp. reported in Spanish bank voles, whereas those infecting the pine martens were related to Hepatozoon felis reported in Spanish cats. In conclusion, the molecular findings show that some non-canid mammals are carriers of H. canis in South America, while red deer may carry T. annulata in Europe. Small mammals in Europe appear to be unlikely hosts of H. canis and H. felis.
