Monthly, seasonal and annual values for outflow and outflow coefficient measured over ten years for a small agricultural catchment are presented. The catchment is situated at 723-822 m a.s.l and covers 40.57 ha. Mean annual precipitation total during the investigated period was 850 mm and mean annual air temperature was 5.9oC. Average annual overall outflow from the catchment was 446 mm, i.e. 52% of total precipitation. The outflow varied considerably in relation to rainfall/snowfall/snowmelt conditions. The highest monthly outflow was in March and the lowest in November (20.6% and 3.8% of the annual outflow, respectively). Considerable variability of the outflow from the catchment is caused mainly by frequent torrential rains in summer and infiltration of water into groundwater reserves during spring snowmelt.
The surface water resources of Belarus for the period 1956-2015 were specified. The redistribution of water resources in the basins of the main rivers and administrative regions was investigated. The refined map of the Belarusian river runoff has been built. Runoff forecasts for 11 rivers in the Neman River basin for two scenarios of A1B and B1 climate change were done. The results of forecasting indicate the increasing of runoff from 5.2% to 20.8%.
On Earth water is an irreplaceable asset, and an estimate of its resource capacity is necessary. The improper selection of indicators of water resources can lead to the underestimation or overestimation of the actual resources present. Incorrect assessments of water resources contribute to the improper completion of necessary water management tasks, thereby failing to satisfy the needs of different water users such as industry, agriculture and forestry, inland water navigation, tourism and recreation and the general population for the purposes of municipal water use. This article discusses the advantages of utilizing Earth Observation technology for estimating water resources in Poland. Despite the large amount of water on Earth, decades of wrongly pursued water management have led to a critical point in maintaining this valuable resource. According to actual estimations, there are enough fresh water resources in the world; the problem is the uneven distribution and pollution of these resources, especially in the case of surface water. Currently, Poland, in comparison with other European countries, is classified as a country with very little water resources. It is important, however, that a thorough evaluation using the latest measurement technologies is conducted, particularly for groundwater resources in deep layers of the lithosphere. The proper assessment of water resources requires knowledge of the hydrogeological conditions within each of the catchments of the analyzed area. International data sets are mostly incomplete and heterogeneous, which makes the comparison of data of several years difficult and often leads to mistakes. While analyzing Polish water resources several factors should be taken into account, including: the amount of rainfall, the amount of water in rivers, lakes and groundwater, and the above-mentioned factors affecting the measurement of the amount of disposable water resources. This article is an introduction to the broader analysis of water resources in Poland and an exploration of the issue from a different perspective.
Nigeria has greater challenges when it comes to water development and management. The current water resources development and supply status is unacceptably low and needs a major transformation. With the rapid growth in population, urbanization, industrialization and competition for economic development, water resource has become vulnerable to depletion and degradation. Management of this valuable resource is determined by its acceptability and utilization in terms of quantity and quality. Due to imbalance between demand and availability, management approaches are facing various ethical dilemas. This paper therefore considers the water supply and sanitation situation in the country and the challenges facing the sector. The paper calls for institutional reforms and review of policy targets, define key elements for the development of action and investment plans as well as provide some guidelines in order to minimize duplication and maximize effectiveness. The paper also suggested strategies and viable framework/agenda for sustainable water supply and emphasizes that the machinery of water resources development and management needs an urgent overhauling with the aim of streamlining the overlapping functions of the various agencies that have operated the system up till now. More importantly, the paper suggested integrated approaches/strategies for sustainable management as well as offers relevant policy recommendations for water resources management in Nigeria.
Integrated water resource management is a process oriented towards sustainable development through the shaping, allocation and monitoring of water resources, taking into account social, economic and environmental objectives. The water management policy realized in Poland is based on the idea of sustainable development and requires the use and application of appropriate evaluation tools in the process of socialized decision-making concerning the initiation and realization of investments with an impact on water management. This study discusses methods of assessment of planned investments, such as: cost and benefit analysis, and environmental impact assessment. These are balanced against the method recommended by the World Commission on Dams – A New Framework for Decision- Making, as well as the main guidelines of the Positional Analysis (PA) method based on Ecological Economics. The latter opposes Neoclassical Economics, as well as Environmental and Natural Resources Economics. Integrated water resource management is a philosophy that informs the attitude that considers the balanced shaping of water resources as the most important objective of managerial activities. Those responsible for the decision making are obliged to take into consideration the wider context that accompanies such a process. They search for and invite many stakeholders to participate in the decision-making process, creating or utilizing the platforms for exchanging often opposing opinions that are present in democratic societies. In such activities, multi-criteria assessment may be a useful instrument, taking into consideration the coincidence of many, often equivalent, objectives, and utilizing a multi-element set of selection criteria. This paper emphasizes the functional values of the multi-criteria evaluation model for an investment, which is based on sustainable development objectives.
Nowadays the increasing number of animal enterprising depending on the needs of human population growth and nutrition need that was occurred during the production of animal breeding have revealed the manure issue. Manure from animal barn, when not stored properly, causes environmental problems including odour and visual pollution, and could create environmental pollution problems. On the other hand, random storage of manure on the land outside animal barn as a result of climate parameters such as rainfall results in leakage of manure and can cause contamination of water resources. In Turkey, animal manure obtained from animal barns is almost not utilized and is accumulated outside. Manure which is produced in animal barn to be used for agricultural purposes must be stored in the areas which prevent the spread of in the environment . Thus, the loss of minerals in the soil plant available forms are contained in manure, will be prevented. In addition, due to the nutrients and microorganisms, surface and underground water resources can be a factor in polluting and may create a risk to animal health and environmental pollution. The study has been carried out by determining the 4950 cattle breeding enterprises around the Eğirdir, Beyşehir Burdur and Salda lakes in the Lakes Region. About 50000 cattle are bred in the 4950 cattle breeding enterprises in the study area. However, of these animals 43502 are bred for commercial purposes. When the values in literature are taken into account, the daily manure amount that would be put forth has been calculated as 1500 tons. It has been concluded that animal manure which is the output of animal breeding enterprises will result in environmental pollution, water resource pollution as well as posing a threat to life in general by mixing with water resources such as underground water, lakes etc. when deposited haphazardly in stacks that are not well managed. As a result, we believe that our producers should be well informed regarding manure management prior to experiencing such problems.
In this paper a review of the lessons learned in the past phase of the ecohydrology project are presented from the hydrologist’s (environmental engineer’s) points of view. The authors believe that so far the ecohydrological programme remained mostly an aquatic-ecological one, without making much use of hydrological and environmental engineering knowledge, which would be required to end up with really working ecohydrological planning tools for the integrated management of water resources. The objective of the paper is to launch, provoke debates and discussions, with the special regard to drawing up the tasks of the next phase of the ecohydrological programme. The basic questions are: what is the role of hydrologists in ecohydrology and how to bridge the still existing gaps of the approaches of ecologists and hydrologists? The ways and means of solving this problem are discussed down to some of the very details of quantifying processes, such as retention rates of nutrients or the forecasting of the ecological (eutrophication) state of standing waters. The paper ends with a list of tasks offered for the next period of the ecohydrological programme.
This paper reviews contemporary practice in regional sediment management, with respect to rehabilitation design. Historically, these issues were rarely addressed effectively leading to many project failures. Recently, however, there has been an increased consideration of regional sediment issues. This movement has been complemented by the development of an increasing number of design approaches that include sediment continuity as an integral part of their design procedure. Of paramount importance is that we learn from these experiences through the undertaking and dissemination of Post-Project Appraisals. The development of a standardised geomorphic Post-Project Appraisal Procedure (PPA) has thus been furthered to focus specifically on regional sediment issues. The refinement and testing of all these techniques is essential for enhancing future design practice.
The main conceptual approaches of water quality assessment and existing methods of standardization and classification of water on various parameters were summarized. Comparative analysis of sanitary and environmental principles of standardization has been fulfilled; the advantages and disadvantages of these approaches were discussed. It was concluded that the most reliable information about the state of the aquatic ecosystem can be obtained by using a physical, chemical and biological parameter complex. The international experience of water quality assessment was analyzed and the priority actions to implement the requirements of the Water Framework Directive in Ukraine were proposed.
