The aim of this research was to investigate formaldehyde content in and volatile organic compounds release from particleboards produced from fibrous chips. The object of the tests were panels produced from fibrous chips of black locust Robinia Pseudoacacia L. and willow Salix Viminalis L., as well as from typical industrial particles. The results show that formaldehyde content in the panels produced from willow fibrous chips is similar to the content in the panels made of industrial particles. The concentration of total volatile organic compounds measured after 4 weeks of storage is significantly lower than the required by the existing regulations.
As a result of examinations carried out, 16 strains of microorganisms able to grow on mineral media with methyl tert-butyl ether as the sole source of carbon and energy were isolated. Bacteria prevailed among the isolated microorganisms . The growth of microorganisms under laboratory conditions was long and accompanied by low biomass increase. Under the conditions of the experiment, the isolated microorganisms did not show any quantitatively measurable biodegradability of methyl tert-butyl ether (MTBE) under aerobic conditions. This requires far-reaching caution with respect to trading in MTBE-modified petrols in order to protect the natural environment in Poland against contamination with that hard-to-biodegrade substance.
This paper presents the results of investigations on the emission of volatile organic compounds (VOC) from oak wood surfaces finished with acrylic waterborne lacquers. The lacquers selected for the experiments were characterised by a different content of solids, fluctuating between 32 and 38%. The volatile organic compounds were analysed using a gas chromatography technique combined with mass spectrometry and thermal desorption (GC/MS/TD). Tenax TA was employed as an adsorption medium. The obtained results indicate that volatile organic compound emissions from the experimental waterborne lacquers varied widely from 388 to 1794 μg/m3. The most important constituents of emissions included compounds that belonged mainly to glycol ethers as well as aliphatic and aromatic hydrocarbons.
