Alloglossidium demshini sp. nov. is described based on specimens from leeches Haemopis grandis collected in northwestern Minnesota. The new species is morphologically closest to Alloglossidium schmidti. The two species can be readily differentiated based on several morphological characters. The cirrus sac in A. schmidti is almost entirely situated anterior to the ventral sucker while in A. demshini sp. nov. it is situated dorsal to the ventral sucker and its proximal end almost reaches the posterior end of ventral sucker or extends posterior to it. The new species has a prepharynx that is substantially longer than the esophagus while in A. schmidti the situation is the opposite. The two species also differ in the position of the ovary and the position of the testes and vitelline fields in relation to the ends of the ceca. Hirudineatrema oschmarini described from leeches in Eastern Palaearctic and Alloglossidium richardsoni described in North America demonstrate great morphological similarity. Nevertheless, Hirudineatrema cannot be synonymized with Alloglossidium at this point because of several peculiar morphological features of H. oschmarini such as a V-shaped excretory bladder and the apparent presence of a true seminal receptacle in the latter species. These features need to be re-evaluated before any taxonomic decision can be made.
A new species of opecoelid trematode, Pseudopecoelus brayi sp. nov. is reported from the holocentrid fish, Myripristis kuntee collected from off Visakhapatnam coast, Bay of Bengal. The new species differs from related species by a combination of characters such as elongate body, deeply lobed gonads, tubular sinuous seminal vesicle extending up to the posterior border of ventral sucker, presence of a short cylindrical cirrus sac enclosing the cirrus and the vitelline zone extending anterior to ventral sucker. This is the 7th species of the genus to be reported from Indian marine fishes and the fifth species from holocentrid fishes. A key for separation of the species of Pseudopecoelus is given.
Helicometra pisanoae sp. n. (Digenea, Opecoelidae) is described based on adult specimens from a fish, Trematomus hansoni (Nototheniidae) caught at the Adelie Land (Eastern Antarctic). The newly described species belongs to the group of species with the terminal, infundibuliform oral sucker. The other diagnostic features are: the sucker ratio based on mean diameter 1:0.84-1.02, blind intestinal caeca, the genital pore closely anterior to the intestinal bifurcation, the cirrus sac reaching posteriorly to the level of posterior half of the ventral sucker and the vitelline follicles reaching to the level of the ventral sucker.
The entire muscular system of the cercaria of D. pseudospathaceum was studied using a wholemount fluorescence technique with rhodamine-labelled phalloidin. The body-wall musculature of the main body consists of circular, longitudinal and diagonal muscles. The musculature of the tail, anterior organ, ventral sucker, and certain parts of the alimentary tract are distinct. The ultrastructure of the two main types of muscle cells (smooth and cross-striated) were described, as was the differentiation of smooth muscles in particular organs. Muscle cells with two major opposing systems of myofilaments were found in the oesophagus.
In total, 400 bony fishes caught at a depth 120-1540 m in the east part of the Weddell Sea were examined and 63 fishes of 4 families occurring at depths of 120-590 m were infected with Macvicaria spp. Three species (185 specimens) were recognised, including two new species, M. microtestis sp. n. and M. longibursata sp. n., and one species, M. georgiana (Kovalyova et Gaevskaya, 1974), previously recorded only in the Western Antarctic. M. microtestis sp. n. occurs in nototheniids (Trematomus spp.) and artedidraconids. It has testes smaller than the ovary and which are entirely obscured by vitelline follicles dorsally. M. longibursata sp. n. occurs in two zoarcid species. It has the cirrus sac extending far posterior to the ventral sucker. M. georgiana occurs in eight species of the genus Trematomus (Nototheniidae) and in Cryodraco antarcticus (Channichthyidae); six host species are new. A key to seven species of the genus Macvicaria occurring in the Antarctic is presented.
