Analyses of the ground waters in respect of presence of residues of plant protection products, i.e. active substances as well as environmental metabolites thereof are performed in the Institute of Plant Protection since the end of 80ties of the past Century. Based on the results obtained in 1993–1994 for 40 wells located in administrative territories of former Poznań, Toruń and Bydgoszcz voivodeships, in the vicinity of intensive agricultural production areas (orchards, farms), wells where significant amounts of residues of triazines group and dealkylated metabolites thereof had been found previously were qualified to further studies. There were 6 wells in which triazine residues were determined most often. Additionally, based on hydrogeological maps, directions of underflows in the areas of well’s locations were determined as well. The aim of the above was to find the additional places for sampling waters distant from pollution sources and estimation of the level of residues of target compounds depending on distance from the basic wells. Seven triazine compounds including basic active substances (atrazine, simazine) and their metabolites [desethyl atrazine, desisopropyl atrazine, desethyldesisopropyl atrazine, hydroxyatrazine and hydroxysimazine] were selected for the presented studies. Residues were analyzed using methodologies designed in the Institute, i.e. solid-phase extraction (SPE) followed by determination by chromatographic techniques HPLC-PDA, GC-NPD and GC-MS. Generally, during 11 years of investigations (1993–2003) samplings were performed 52 times and 323 samples of groundwater including that from additional wells were analyzed. Most often residues of atrazine and deethylatrazine in wells located in environs of Poznań were detected.
The aim of this study was to measure emotional arousal in young race horses as expressed by heart rate (HR) during routine situations of grooming, hoof cleaning, and while at rest, having been transported from the environment of home stud farm to that of an unfamiliar training centre. A hypothesis was developed that the change of environment is a source of heavy stress for young race horses. The investigation involved 22 Purebred Arabian stallions and 19 Purebred Arabian mares, 2.5 years old, and 11 Thoroughbred stallions and 10 Thoroughbred mares, at the age of 1.5 years. The horses were examined twice: first in their home stud farms, and then three days after being moved to an unfamiliar training centre. The HR was measured at rest and while the horses were being groomed in their boxes. The HR registered during the grooming session at the new stable increased significantly in all studied groups of horses compared to the data obtained at their home stud farm. This increase was significantly higher in the groups of 1.5-year–old Thoroughbred stallions and mares than in the groups of 2.5-year-old Purebred Arabian horses. Young race horses should not be groomed just before training because the grooming routine involves their emotional arousal.
The aim of the research was to investigate the transfer of heavy metals (lead (Pb) and cadmium (Cd)) and their antagonists in the group of essential micro-elements (magnesium (Mg), copper (Cu) and zinc (Zn)) from the organism of sheep to the organism of their offspring in milk. The research was carried out in two stages. The control group consisted of sheep with healthy milk glands, while the experimental group consisted of animals presenting subclinical mastitis. In the first stage of the research the distribution of toxic elements, Pb and Cd, administered per os to the mothers was studied by establishing their content in blood and milk. A measurable indicator for evaluating the transfer of toxic substances to milk, in both groups of animals was the content of the elements under investigation in the lambs’ blood. The concentrations of Mg, Cu and Zn were also ascertained in the biological material collected. The aim of the second stage of the study was to evaluate the transfer of the heavy metals as well as the essential elements from the organism of the mother to the offspring through healthy and pathologically altered milk glands. The mothers were administered a mixture of salts of Cd, Pb, Mg, Zn and Cu, which activated mechanisms of antagonistic and synergetic interaction between the toxic metals and the essential elements, as illustrated by the content of these metals determined in the blood and milk of the mothers and in the blood of the lambs. A proof of a favorable influence of Mg, Cu and Zn on the content of Pb and Cd in the blood and milk of the mothers was a 4-5 times lower content of Pb in the milk of ewes, as compared with the first stage of the research. The per os administration of Mg, Cu and Zn to the ewes showed their statistically significant increase in blood as well as milk. The reduction in the levels of Pb and Cd in the ewes’ milk, observed in the second stage of the research, was corroborated by their decreased content in the blood of the lambs in both groups of animals.
Zbadano wpływ temperatury na zjawisko przenikania olejków eterycznych, pomarańczowego i miętowego, do komórek drożdży piekarskich. Olejki mieszano z zawiesiną wodną świeżych drożdży i wytrząsano w temp. 25, 40, 50 i 70°C w różnym czasie.
Alien tick species of the genera Ixodes, Amblyomma, Hyalomma and Rhipicephalus are sporadically transferred to the territories of the Central European countries. A biological-medical review of the following alien tick species transferred to Poland is presented: Ixodes eldaricus, Ixodes festai, Amblyomma sphenodonti, Amblyomma exornatum, Amblyomma flavomaculatum, Amblyomma latum, Amblyomma nuttalli, Amblyomma quadricavum, Amblyomma transversale, Amblyomma varanense, Hyalomma aegyptium, Hyalomma marginatum, Rhipicephalus rossicus and Rhipicephalus sanguineus. The transfers of tick species out of the areas of natural distribution are divided into natural transfers (e.g., migration of ticks on hosts) and accidental transfers (e.g., resulting from the transport of livestock animals, trade in exotic animals, and transfers on animals during travel). It is important to monitor occurrence of unknown tick species on hosts in Poland.
