Brinjal (Solanum melongena L.) suffers from the attack of various pests throughout its different stages of the crop growth. Different insecticides are used to control these pest infestations. The application of these insecticides on brinjal plants may have an effect on their quality and nutritional parameters of fruit samples. In the present study effect of three different insecticides viz. Triazophos 40% E.C. Carbaryl 50% W.D.P, Cypermethrin 10% E.C. and Azadiractin 10,000 ppm formulation belonging to different groups namely organophosphate, carbamate, synthetic pyrethroids and botanical insecticide on brinjal fruit quality, nutritional parameters and total antioxidant capacity (TAC) were assessed in field conditions. The results showed that different insecticides at field application dose showed minute insignificant variation in fruit nutritional and total antioxidant activity parameters in comparison to the control samples. The fruit quality parameters also showed minute variation in comparison to the control, except in the case of Triazophos treated samples which showed significant variation (p<0.05) in total soluble sugar content and crude protein.
Introduction. The Total Antioxidant Capacity (TAC) of human milk reflects the concentration and the activity of many components which prevent oxidative degradation of fats and proteins. This study compares the effectiveness of ABTS and DPPH tests with regard to the recovery, precision and sensitivity (detection and quantification limit) of (TAC) values in human milk. Material and methods. TAC values were determined in twenty five samples of human milk obtained from healthy mothers, residents of Gdańsk, on the 14,h day postpartum. Results. The average TAC of human milk determined by ABTS assay was 19.61 ±3.311 mg TE (Trolox Equivalents)/100 cm3, the average values obtained by the DPPH assay reached 9.95 ±4.36 mg TE/100 cm3. For each milk sample the TAC determined by the ABTS test was significantly higher than the values produced by the DPPH test. The above findings can be attributed to the presence of substances whose spectra overlap with DPPH’ spectra. ABTS test was characterised by a higher sensitivity and repeatability of the determination of TAC in human milk compared to the DPPH test. Conclusions. Comparing the calculated values for the validation parameters of both methods and taking into account the solubility of DPPH only in polar matrices, slower reaction of selected antioxidants with DPPH radical, and the presence in human milk constituents absorbing electromagnetic radiation in the absorption of DPPH be assumed that the ABTS test is more appropriate method of determining of TAC in breast milk.
The aim of the experiment was to determine the effect of two storage temperatures (+1 °C and +4 °C) and modified atmosphere packaging (MAP) on the posthar- vest quality of 'Glen Ample' raspberry. Fruits were picked into 450-g well-ventilated plastic punnets, cooled down for 24 hours and packed as follows: control - unpacked ventilated punnets covered with a lid; punnets wrapped in Xtend® film, punnets wrapped with PP30 - 30 ^m polypropylene film and punnets wrapped with OPP25 - 25 ^m oriented polypropylene film. One treatment consisted of eight replicate bags. After 3 days in cool storage, all packages were kept at +15 °C for 24 hours to simulate retail conditions. The O2 and CO2 content in the packages was measured daily. Soluble solids content (SSC), titratable acidity (TA), fruit firmness, ascorbic acid content (AAC), antho- cyanins (ACY) and total antioxidant capacity (TAC) were determined at harvest and at the end of storage. The number of spoiled fruits was recorded and a sensory evaluation was carried out at the end of the experiment. Vol. 19(1) 2011: 145-153 During the first 24 hours, the concentration of CO2 increased to 10% in the PP30 and OPP25 packages at +4 °C, while at +1 °C it took 48 hours to reach that level. In the Xtend® packages, CO2 concentration increased above 10% only after the shelf life simulation. The environment in the PP30 and OPP25 packages became anaerobic in retail conditions. Fruit spoilage was significantly lower in the PP30 and OPP25 packages, where the CO2 content increased rapidly. Raspberries had higher SSC, TA, SSC/TA and ACY at +4 °C than at +1 °C. Fruits in the Xtend® packages were significantly firmer than in the other treatments. The mean effect of MAP and the storage temperatures was such that they had no significant influence on raspberry fruit appearance, flavour and off- flavour. Raspberries kept at +4 °C tasted better to the evaluators.
Total antioxidant capacity (TAC, assayed by FRAP method) of three basil (Ocimum basilicum L.) cultivars subjected to chilling stress ( 10°C) and at the recovery stage was studied. To estimate the influence of temperature on the conditions of plants, the biométrie parameters and leaf water content were measured. It was established that chill does not influence significantly growth of basil plants and leaf water content, but decreases TAC of leaves of 'Sweet Green Genovese' and 'Kasia' cvs. plants. Plants of Polish cultivars 'Kasia' and 'Wala' have a bigger biomass production by individual plant than the Dutch cultivar 'Sweet Green Genovese'. C. var. 'Wala' has the biggest productivity. However, TAC of its leaves is the lowest, whereas 'Sweet Green Genovese' c.var. plants give low biomass, but of high reducing capacity.
