The 7th International Science Conference on “Chip and Chipless Woodworking Processes” was organised on 9-11 September 2010 in Terchova, Slovakia, by the Department of Woodworking at the Faculty of Wood Sciences and Technology of the Technical University in Zvolen. The aim of the Conference was to provide the specialists in science, research and pedagogy with a forum to present and discuss new knowledge and results in the field of chip and chipless woodworking processes.
We used chromosome data to verify the taxonomic affiliation of specimens previously recognized as Brachyactis ciliata. All analyzed plants were diploids based on x = 7 (2n = 2x = 14), the basic number characteristic for Symphyotrichum ciliatum, allowing the examined species to be shifted from the genus Brachyactis to the genus Symphyotrichum sect. Conyzopsis. The chromosome number (2n = 2x = 14) for specimens of S. ciliatum from Poland is reported for the first time.
The rep-PCR fingerprinting method, with the support of ERIC and REP primers, was used to analyse the genomic diversity of 93 E. coli strains isolated from lake water samples drawn at two different depths. The applied UPGMA for DNA analysis did not reveale any genomic similarities between the 48 E. coli strains derived from the subsurface-zone water and the 43 of the bottom-zone water. The considerable genomic diversity of the E. coli of the surface zone was expressed as a dendrogram in the form of 8 similarity groups comprising strains isolated from samples drawn over one month. The bottom-zone strains, which display a lesser degree of genomic diversity (5 similarity groups), showed distinct common features in their DNA fingerprints. In the similarity dendrogram for the bottom-zone, strains derived in different months of sampling were segregated into the same similarity groups. Applying REP primers in rep-PCR generates more complex fingerprints increasing the discriminatory power of the analysis, whereas the ERIC primer generates less complex fingerprint patterns, and is thus clearer to interpret.
On September 2–5 took place 3rd Scientific Conference “Woodworking Technique” in Zaleina (Croatia). The organizer of the conference was Department for Process Techniques of Zagreb Unversity in cooperation with Department of Wood Procesing of Czech University of Agriculture in Prague. The leading subject of the conference was widely treated wood processing. Presentations of papers took place in two sections: section one – “Woodworking technique” and section two – “Woodworking processes”. In the conference participated representatves of the universities and research centres from 6 countries from Central Europe. Poland was reprezented by Technical Univerity of Poznan, Poznan University of Life Sciences and Wood Technology Institute in Poznan. Alltogether 37 papers were preented in that number 4 from Poland.
