The article describes a duplication of thoracic scutum of Pterostichus melanarius. We found a specimen with two completely separate scuta.
Despite the variety of modern molecular techniques available, examination of foetal anatomy is still a fundamental part of teratological studies in evaluating the developmental toxicity of xenobiotics or other non-chemical factors. The article presents contemporary methods of embryotoxicity and foetotoxicity assessment. A single alizarin red S and double alcian blue followed by alizarin red S staining, as well as various methods of soft tissue examination are discussed.
A survey of abnormalities was carried out on 5567 C. pyrrhogaster, which were collected in spring and autumn of 1995 in the same area of Japan as that surveyed earlier (in 1981 and 1985). As before, male and female individuals were afflicted in roughly equal proportions and cases of papilloma occurred in 1.6%. However, fewer incidences of limb-, finger-, and toe-abnormalities were recorded. The highest figure was in the autumn collection, but even then only 0.6% of all animals showed morphological abnormalities of the appendages. It is suggested that improvements in water quality and greater environmental awareness by the public could be responsible for the drop in abnormalities.
A colony of Myrmica rubra (L.) parasitised by the mermithid nematodes was found in Pieniny Mts (S Poland). About 25% of the adult workers were infested, and their body, apart from a visibly distended gaster, was modified to an extent previously unknown in mermithised Myrmica ants (shape of body parts, sculpture, pilosity). The morphology of infested and non-infested individuals was compared using standard measurements and indices employed in taxonomy of the genus Myrmica Latr. Mermithogenic modifications of body structure in Myrmica species are signalled to be the cause of the possible taxonomie problems and mistakes.
This article discusses an interesting case of wing teratology in Sympetrum sanguineum (O. F. Muller, 1764). The wing is small and deformed. Some veins have a modiffied course or are missing. This a resuls from larval wing primordium damage, which decreased the oxygene and haemolymph inflow.
