This study aims to determine the attitudes of prospective forest engineers and primary school teachers toward sustainable development, and the impact of an “Environmental Training” course on these attitudes. The research was conducted in two faculties of Artvin Coruh University during the spring term of the academic year 2011-12. The study groups consist of first- and second-year students (N=104) enrolled in the Primary Education Department of the Faculty of Education, and first- and second-year students (N=74) studying in the Forest Engineering Department of the Faculty of Forestry. The findings of the study that followed a case study were obtained from interviews and an “Attitude Scale toward Sustainable Environment”. The data were analyzed both quantitatively and qualitatively. After the interviews, it was concluded that the majority of the participants had knowledge about sustainable development in environmental terms only and that they did not know the other dimensions.
The major objective of the study was the identification of methods of overcoming educational difficulties occurring at classes of physical education at the stage of jnuor high school education. The study was carried out with the method of a diagnostic survey, with a questionnaire being the main research technique. The questionnaire survey was conducted amongst 53 teachers of physical education working in seven junior high schools located in the city of Zamość The questionnaire survey was completed by interviews conducted with six school headmasters and seven pedagogues working at those schools. The conducted analysis of results enables concluding that a significant part of the teachers of physical education were tangibly facing shortages of knowledge on the educational methods, and that methods of imposing discipline on pupils during classes of physical education are in most cases based on talk and persuasion. Only a small group of the surveyed teachers of physical education is convinced about the necessity of adjusting a school programme to interests of the junior high school pupils. The account made by school pedagogues and headmasters indicates that the prophylactic and educational activities undertaken at the surveyed schools include, most of all, various educational programmes which enable diagnosis and counteracting threats resulting from addiction and violence and which tend to the strengthening of self-esteem in the adolescents and their ability to cope with problems.
in the paper I present the changes in geographical education in context of political, economic and social transitions during the period of transformation. Teachers, who experienced consequences of those transitions, bring some elements of postcommunistic past to their ways of thinking and acting in neoliberal present times. Coexistence of two axio-normative systems implies uncertainty and tension in teachers' didactic and educational work, as well as force them to take up the difficult decisions. From the moral perspective those decisions focus on choosing between the ideal of perfection and rightness or the personality perfection. The teachers bear the long-term responsibility in front of themselves and their students for the choices they made on the field of teaching geography.
According to the obtained results we can state that the surveyed group of junior school teachers know the assumptions on the project method but use this method of work with different frequency. The teachers are aware of same difficulties and restrictions concerning this method of work in reference not only to their own workshop but also to school conditions. They can identify the restricitng factors. The obligatory introduction of the project method to the third stage of eduction will increase its usage while teaching-learning practice but the question stili remains: will the effectivness of geography teaching increase? The answer to this question may only be obtained by conducting the survey in this field.
The subject of personality of PE teachers has been investigated since the 1960s. The pioneering contributions to the area were made by Prof. Bohuslav Hodaň (Palacký University in Olomouc) and Prof. Bohumil Svoboda (Charles University in Prague). Nearly all Central European countries have dealt with similar problems related to physical education. The 1970s and 1980s witnessed the regular organization of conferences around the subject of “Personality of PE teacher” as the basic platform for exchange of information and materials. The conferences were organized by Bohuslav Hodaň and the staff of the Department of Physical Education. They were organized every 2 years, and later every 3 years, from 1972 to 1981. The period of local projects in the late 1980s was marked with the development of the Czechoslovak government projects in cooperation with Poland and Hungary. The leading institution became the Faculty of Physical Education and Sports in Prague (Prof. B. Svoboda). The subject of “coaching” was included later. Local Palacký University projects focused on the education of PE specialists under the umbrella of elementary and/or special schools teachers. They had been the starting point for the training of Adapted Physical Activity professionals. The 1990s featured a focus on APA teachers, development of study programs, connecting theory with practice and assessment of graduates. A longitudinal project of assessment of PE teachers from the time of their university education through teaching practice to their retirement was a separate project which lasted 32 years (from 1974 to 2006). Research on PE graduates between 1998 and 2005 led by Prague and Olomouc sports faculties involved all departments of Physical Education in the Czech Republic. The aim of recent research focuses on study motivation, “successful – non-successful” graduates and curriculum development, especially within the APA and Recreology study programs.
This research, which had the character of a pilot study, assessed the relations between life satisfaction (LS) and one and two subject teaching, as well as LS and extracurricular sport activities of secondary school teachers of Physical Education (PE).We studied the relations within each gender. The sample comprised 42 subjects with a minimum 20 years of experience in teaching. The average age of men was 53 and of women 49,9 years of age. We assessed LS through the Satisfaction with Life Scale (Diener et al., 1985). We utilized a tailor-made non-standard questionnaire to identify extracurricular sport activities and basic sociographic data. The data was processed with the statistical relation Chi Square analysis. The LS level of the women is higher than the level of the men but there is no significant difference. Very minor differences were revealed in the evaluation of LS in relation to the teaching of one or two subject teaching. Women have a tendency to be much more active in extracurricular sport activities and sport activities that have the character of being organized. This variable does not appear to be the determinant in relation to their LS. The frequency of extracurricular sport activities and LS have a statistically significant relation for the men. We recommend to observe the LS in relation to the participation in extracurricular sport activities by using substantially larger sample of male and female PE teachers. Motivation aspect with regard to interests and workload compensation should be taken in to account.
